I Never Said That I Was Brave

I'm not entirely sure about this banana...

Randoms...

Day off, so no on the floor navel gazing.

Instead: a blog that may be interesting reading. I'd like to pretend I'm getting in on the ground floor of my own accord, but it was flagged by the incomparable Lisa Lynch, she of Alright Tit fame.
It's, I guess, a dating diary of an expat Brit... I'm thinking it'll make for interesting reading; we'll see.

Also for your consideration - things that have made me smile today:

1. A man walking his dog. Not obviously smile worthy, but the man seemed a little too old for the dog, which was a sort of terrier puppy, and furiously energetic in the way only the children of all species can be. The dog was an extendable lead, and just belting around the man, aimlessly running at full tilt in ever-expanding circles. I realise it's wrong to try and anthropomorphasise animals, but the dog really did seem to have an expression of pure joy. It must be nice to derive such pleasure from something so simple.

2. Two people reversing toward each other in a supermarket car park. I've seen this several times, and I don't know why people find it so difficult, or why it please me so much, but it does. The sheer bloody mindedness of these folks delights me. Both drivers appear to be aware that, if they continue going backward, they will crash into each other, but both appear to think it the duty of the other driver to stop. A low speed crash inevitably results, and I can't help but think they deserve it. I'm not sure what this says about me.

Good From Afar...

I t has been suggested to me that I should be writing more, and indeed, more about certain subjects; I surely agree that to keep my part in our covenant, dear reader, I should be writing more. Writing under duress, however, worries me; I worry that my output will resemble drivel more than usual. Duress, is probably too strong a word, and I certainly need the prodding.

Well I'll try.

I had something I wanted to pitch about close ups. Real and figurative. La Belle Fille shouldtake particular note that this an example of me thinking out loud in general terms, and not talking about specifics.

I had ben struck by how many things in modern life look very shiny, or nice, or fun, until you see them close up, until you see their faults writ large. Everything, everybody has faults, but I fear modern life conditions us to expect the impossible, that everyting should be blemish-free.

Maybe I'm just disappointed in myself for buying into it.

Once again, this is just aimless generality. I think its important that we should all be aware of that.

Odds And Sods

Ruminations...

Struggle on, trying to finish some work related research, revise, generally live my life. It goes slowly; I think I'd be good as a sloth. Although not sure I'd pass the entrance exam.

La Belle Fille continues to understand, which is good of her; spent the weekend hanging out, which is good for the soul; I also had the pleasure of seeing possibly the world's biggest round of cheese at the local French market. God love the French.

A brief flag for NotDrRant. This blog has a very different spin on the NHS; a patient's view, and not a complimentary one. I'm in favour of free speech, so you should feel free to check them out, tho' I don't hold with their take on the causes of the faults ( to whit, it's all the doctor's fault. ) That having sad, the author doesn't seem to have been served very well by the NHS.

It raises at least one interesting point. (For a certain value of the word 'interesting') While patients can, almost without fear of censure or repercussion, write what they want about the medical profession, or indeed specific members therof, the medical profession has little, or no, right of reply. So, there is little to stop Mr Smith naming me as, for example, "a cunt", for all the world to read. But if I name Mr Smith as, for example, a wife-beating kiddie-fiddler... the Law has me by the balls.

On balance, I'm in favour of confidentiality. Publishing lists of naughty people all too often results in hysteria, and Paediatricians having their houses shit-bombed; but shouldn't there be some sort of quid pro quo? As a medical professional, I must be completely transparent; I accept this. I must also be inscrutable; I accept this, too.

But should there be some sort of checks and balances to stop my being compared to reproductive anatomy?

Things That Make You Go 'Why?'

Hat-tip to Kal at TQ.
Further details to follow, especially involving La Belle Fille, who was heard to complain that her 'character' appeared to have been written out...

Well, I'll try...

1. I firmly believe that God (or the Devil) is in the details. Especially in music, and often have a favourite bass line / drum fill etc in a song. (For example, Billy Preston's keyboards in Get Back, the little bass run toward the end of Son of a Preacher Man, the horns in Hazey Jane II...)

2. I am more sentimental than I would like to let on, and can usually be found carrying mementos of absent friends in my pocket.

3. My 3 favourite American Football players are Lary Csonka, Fran Tarkenton and Dan Marino.

4. I am becoming increasingly obsessed with the Napoleonic Wars.

5. I weigh exactly the same today as I did when I was 18; I'm not sure if this is a good thing, or not.

6. I cannot help but develop unusual favourites -for example: hernias (spighelion), bacterium (bacillus cereus, tho cytocapnophagia canemoris runs it a close second). I genuinely can't understand the looks I get when I tell other people this. You've gotta have favourites, haven't you? It's not like their my kids or anything?

7. I've been half a Best Man 3 times.

All in all, a bit lame... sorry. And because I'm such a curmudgeon, I'm not taggin' anyone else just yet. Maybe later.

Secret Pleasures, Number 2

The grudging respect I earned on Saturday morning for my transformation from 'walking corpse' at woken up +1, to 'functional human being' at woken up +5.

Seems like all those nights on call taught me something, after all

Final Report

It seems unlikely that I will achieve much more work this weekend - I've gt a lot of beer drinking and socialising planned... so:

1. Dentist visited; my teeth hurt more now, and I've gotta go again next month. I believe I'm putting his kids through College
2. Optician visited; eyes are fine
3. Hair cut; ears drafty
4. Hot water repair arranged; next week, I hope
5. Fence repair arranged; 10 days
6. House semi-tidy; about as good as it gets...
7. House re-mortgaged
8. Suits drycleaned.
9. Thought about painting; fail...
10. Paperwork up to date
11. And filed!
12. Audits still unwritten; fail...
13. Presentations done and done
14. Case report still in the pipeline; fail...
So, I got most shit done, and what isn't done should be within the week... not bad by my standards. Photos of fence to follow...
Oh, and I had my car serviced....
I realise this is all in a day's work for most people, but it's quite an achievement for me....

She Has Robes And She Has Monkeys

She lives on Love Street...

So I've reached halfway point of my leave.
Rather lamely, I don't feel I've achieved anything. I worked last Sunday night, so last Monday was a right-off, and then I worked Wednesday night too, so that ballsed up Weds / Thurs, and I've been fairly vegetative since. However, I am on track to have got things done, which is an unusual change for me. Details to follow at the end of the week. If Colossus is still out there, I know he's expecting much inertia. We'll see.

As an extra task, I'm going to try and hook up with a few old friends. Guys I went to school with, but don't see very often - both distance and the NHS get in the way. The problem I usually have is that they've invariably organised something to do- which is not unreasonable. I believe it's called having a life. I can almost remember when I had one myself... (cue violins, droning in the background)

But it's frustrating to find out all your friends are up to something you can't get involved with - usually because it's a ticketed affair, or whanot. A painful reminder of how far out of my old social circle I've fallen. Time marches on for all of us, I guess. I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but Pa Shroom once told me he was meeting a friend of his, whose Best Man he'd been, but had hardly seen since. Naively, I used to wonder how such a thing could happen.

It's all too clear to me now.

Well, you pays your money, you takes your choice.

If any of my dear readers share my affection for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, I urge you to invest in a copy of his live performance from 1975 at Hammersmith. But I imagine most of you won't be interested. Shame on you.
